Salmon (Salmo salar)
Salmon is one of the most famous migratory fish species. Its life begins in a well oxygenated, cold waters of fast flowing streams. Then it flows down the river into the sea, where it reaches maturity, and it returns to spawn in the river where it comes from. Thanks to a well-developed sense of smell it can detect the smell of the native river. It is a predator, it feeds mainly on fish, benthos, sometimes it also catches insects from the surface of the water. During spawning males change their coloration into a darker shades, and the lower jaw takes the shape of a hook.
Salmon became extinct in the Odra River as a result of over-fishing, the pollution of spawning sites and the construction of dams that prevent fish migration. For this reason, it was necessary to undertake the recovery of this species using the method of reintroduction.
