Perch (Perca fluviatilis)

Perch is one of the most common and the most beautifully coloured freshwater fish species. Its body is covered with scales with tiny spikes, thus the fish is rough to the touch like a grater. It has a green color, and on the sides there are some dark streaks that look like stripes on a tiger. The mouth of the perch is armed with numerous sharp teeth. Its white, delicate meat is one of the greatest culinary delicacies.

It lives mostly in schools, preferring slowly flowing waters. It likes staying at the bottom, near bushes, rocks and other hiding places. Perch is not a very fussy predator, it can even be a cannibal. Its growth depends on the food supply – the less food in the environment, the smaller is the size it achieves. Thanks to the fast and easy reproduction and its gluttony it easily adapts to adverse environmental conditions.
