Zander (Stizostedion Iucioperca)

For anglers, the zander is the most popular fish in the perch family. Its gray-green coloration and the milky white belly are complemented by dark lateral stripes on the sides. The hallmark of the zander are big “doggy” protruding teeth at the front of the mouth, and its eyes of a peculiar glassy glare.

The zander is a predatory fish because it feeds on small fish and other species, and has cannibalistic inclinations. During the chase it follows the prey on a characteristic zigzag path, and attacks it at close range. By day, it stays at greater depths and it often comes to the banks. It is the most active at night. It has a large oxygen demand but avoids transparent waters. Sensitive to pollution, it does not stand silted and acid water. Its natural enemy is the pike.
